Can you guess what the class is seeing? Check out the different levels (high, medium and low) their bodies are in, the expression on their faces, and the frozen movement they created. This task was to create a ___________ using all people and hold it for 5 seconds. Can you guess what animal it is just by looking at this group below?

Today, we brainstormed what students need to write to earn a Level 3 in both the reading and writing components for EQAO. This was not news to them. It's the same criteria we have been using in class throughout the year. I felt it was important though to take a targeted look at it though just so students know what is expected. Here is what they came up with together. Of course, students will then edit for COPS.
(Capitals, Oh does it make sense, Punctuation, Spelling) Our trip to Bridlewood's True Sports Day was such a fun experience. Margaret Kellaway hosted this special event that included some special guests Mr. Hubley and two olympic atheltes as well as 5 fun activities.
Sekou Kaba spoke about his experiences with sport as a child and how it came about for him to become an Olympic hurdler. He shared with us his KABA KEYS: K - Kind - be kind even to bullies because they are the ones that need it the most A - Ask - don't be alone so ask for help B - Believe - believe in yourself, believe and you can achieve A - Adjust - when faced with a problem or controversy; you can't always be in control all the time but we can find ways to work through problems Some other words of wisdom are "Competitors are our best friends because they push us to try harder." Melanie McCann has been to 2 Olmpics as a modern pentathelete. Her 5 events are: swimming, fencing, horse jumping, running and target shooting. She loves sports because when you fail you get to try again. The 5 activitiies that students participated in were: 1. Meeting, asking questions to and getting autographs from Sekou and Melanie 2. Tug of Peace and 3 Person Race 3 Over - Under 4. Healthy Food Race 5. Parachute and Limbo The day ended with a presentation to Margaret Kellaway for her 10 uears of service to put on the True Sport Day for the Bridlewood schools. Finally, students received a drink and a treat as well as a bag of sport equipment for the classroom. Many activities occurred over Education Week like the inspirational Good News messages written in chalk on the sidewalk outside the front of the school, a school wide buddy reading block . I was quite pleased by the number of parents who were able to come to the Muffin Morning and share in their children's work and experiences here at school. Our Easter Mass was reverent and inspiring, as well as beautiful - filled with the wonderful voices of the St. James Choir. We had hoped to finish it off with Cleaning The Capital but the rain had different plans for us. We will tackle that job next week. Students brainstormed what is collaboration and what needs to be done to do it well. Then they put it to the test by accepting the Tallest Marshmallow Tower Challenge. Using only the materials given and 18 minutes, each group collaborated to build a tower that held a marshmallow. Only 1 group finished the challenge with a standing tower BUT every group WON because most boys and girls experienced effective collaboration - working together as a team, sharing ideas, listening to each other and perservering to the end. Fraser from the Martin Clan and Mike who speaks Mohawk spoke all about specific aspects of the First Nations culture. They talked about the reasons why different peoples had different homes - teepees and wigwams for nomadic and longhouses for the clans that stayed in one place to farm (mostly corn). They explained to us the importance of a medicine circle ( ciricles are important because it relales to four seasons, the life cycle), it's four colours and the medicines associated with it (sage, tobacco, cedar and sweetgrass used for "smudging"). After our educational talk they taught us the Stomp Dance which involved singing, stomping, and rattle playing. The pictures below show many of the different rattles we were allowed to use. I have video of the dances. I will play them during Education Week at the Muffin Breakfast/Open house. First students used their creative writing side and brainstormed ideas all about their stuffy's hobbies, likes, and other important information. Then, a great deal of effort was placed into writing paragraphs using that information. Measurement was the next focus. Students used rulers and measuring tapes and measured in cm all sorts of things on their stuffy (e.g. length of leg, width of paw) and then themselves. They even got to explore the concept of circumference. It was interesting to see the estimates that were made prior to the actual measuring. |
