Fraser from the Martin Clan and Mike who speaks Mohawk spoke all about specific aspects of the First Nations culture. They talked about the reasons why different peoples had different homes - teepees and wigwams for nomadic and longhouses for the clans that stayed in one place to farm (mostly corn). They explained to us the importance of a medicine circle ( ciricles are important because it relales to four seasons, the life cycle), it's four colours and the medicines associated with it (sage, tobacco, cedar and sweetgrass used for "smudging"). After our educational talk they taught us the Stomp Dance which involved singing, stomping, and rattle playing. The pictures below show many of the different rattles we were allowed to use. I have video of the dances. I will play them during Education Week at the Muffin Breakfast/Open house.
